Quest for Senior Skin Care with Rosacea

by Shirley
(Tyler, TX USA)

First, I want to say how delighted I am to find this helpful website, and how much I appreciate the help you are giving. I look forward to growing in knowledge, and seeing the results as I follow your advice.

I am 77 y/o, fair skinned, with no problems with my skin except aging, although when I was 23, I had acne and was treated with xray - 10 sessions, I remember.

My skin problems: I don't like the wrinkles around my mouth that just started a couple of years ago. Also, for several years, I noticed a couple of red spots on my cheeks that wouldn't go away, and little blood vessels appearing on the sides of my nose. Now I have a bump on my nose that is a little rough that won't go away. When I went to the doctor and dermatologist to check it out, they both said "Rosacea." I didn't know what Rosacea was, but after a while, I decided to find out. When I learned that supposedly there is no cure, I was alarmed.

Thanks so much for helping me get a new start with my skin problems.

I Found a Science Article on the Real Cause of Rosacea
by: Shirley

Hello,

Just thought I'd share something I learned lately about Rosacea, and a followup conversation with my doctor. I went for an annual exam Thursday, and I told her I had found an article about the findings of some scientific researcher on the real cause of Rosacea, and that it wasn't bacteria. I forgot momentarily that she had prescribed an antibiotic cream to treat my Rosacea. She answered by listing the triggers of Rosacea flare ups. Did she hear me?

I gave her the article saying that although I'm not familiar with very much medical terminology, I thought I understood it was stating that the cause had been discovered, and that I was sure she would understand all the parts that I didn't, and that I surely hope that it is true. I left the printout with her.

It was titled "Cause Of Skin Condition Rosacea Discovered" published in the Science Daily (Aug. 5, 2007)

I think it best if I quote a little of the article instead of trying to explain.

The article starts with: A team of researchers, led by Richard L. Gallo, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Dermatology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine and the Dermatology section of the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, has determined that it is not one, but a combination of two abnormal factors, that result in rosacea. "It's like having lots of gasoline...and a match," said Gallo, principal investigator of the study which will be published in the August 5 online edition of Nature Medicine.

In essence, the researchers found that over-production of two interactive inflammatory proteins results in excessive levels of a third protein that causes rosacea symptoms, "a trifecta of unfortunate factors in people with rosacea," according to Gallo.

More: Rosacea, which has been called adult acne, usually affects people with fair skin, between the ages of 30 and 60. Unlike acne, rosacea isn't associated with a skin infection by one type of bacteria, although antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to treat its symptoms...

* * * *

Surely this team of researchers will follow up with a treatment, hopefully a cure.

Dr. Perricone's 3 day nutritional face lift plan
by: Shirley

After doing a lot of online research on skin problems, particularly Rosacea, I decided to start by trying Dr. Perricone's 3 day nutritional face lift plan. It's all about eating healing foods, and they must be eaten exactly as he has planned for the best results. I think I could grade myself with an A-, mainly because I could NOT eat all the food in his plan - it was SO much!

I did the plan as a jump start to get me going on the right track for skin care, but I lost weight without trying. In fact, this is a great weight loss program I would recommend for that purpose. I started on the 28th weighing 136.6 and this morning, I weighed 134.4, and that was, as I said, after stuffing myself for 3 days. I'm hoping this means my body is freer of inflammation, as was one of his goals. It is now 6:47 a.m., so I will try to post more some time today.

I just re-read my first post
by: Shirley

After re-reading my second paragraph in my first comment, I realize it looks like I'm saying I have no skin problem, and next I'm saying I have a problem - that doesn't make sense. I meant to say my ordinary skin issues are not worrying me, but my worrisome problem is Rosacea...
